USDA agencies have been the backbone of support to farmers the United States. From financing farm operations and acquisitions to helping farmers implement conservation measures, most agriculture in the US doesn’t get done without the USDA. However, the experience of Black farmers has been the opposite of their White counterparts. Discriminatory practices by the USDA over the years have led to the theft of Black land resulting in the number of Black farms being drastically reduced.
In this episode of the Sustainable AG Rider Podcast, I speak with Mr. James Ford, CEO of Square O Consulting and an employee of close to forty years with the National Resource Conservation Service. James and I discuss his time at NRCS, the challenges he faced as a Black NRCS employee and the current outlook for Black farmers in the United States.
